Garden Accents: Ornaments and Structures to Elevate Your Outdoor Space

A garden is more than just plants - a little sanctuary right outside your door. While trees, shrubs and blooming plants set the stage, it's the thoughtful details - like arches, benches, trellises, fountains, birdbaths - that give your garden personality. These physical structures guide the eye, create interest and help your garden tell its own unique story.

So how can you bring some of that charm into your own space? Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate garden ornaments and features into your landscape - and yes, you can find a curated selection at all Cactus & Tropicals stores.

CREATE HEIGHT AND DRAMA WITH TRELLISES AND OBELISKS

If your garden is feeling a little flat, vertical elements can make a world of difference. By adding a trellis, obelisk or arbor you can provide support for climbing plants, such as roses, clematis, morning glory or wisteria. But, these structures do more than just give your plants something to cling to, they also draw the eye upward, adding a sense of depth and height.

ADD MOVEMENT AND SOUND WITH FOUNTAINS

The gentle sound of trickling water adds a calming vibe that transforms your garden into a retreat. Not everybody has a natural waterfall or a little brook in their backyard, but a fountain will do the trick. It doesn't have to be a grand or expensive water feature - even a small tabletop version can enhance a patio or balcony.

ANCHOR SPACES WITH GARDEN FURNITURE

A well placed bench or chair is more than a place to sit - it invites you to relax in your garden and experience nature up close. If you add a small table it will also be a spot for coffee, drinks or a casual meal outside. Look for benches made from materials to complement your garden - we love teak or metal which will take on a weathered look after a few seasons.

PLACE STATUARY FOR THE FINAL TOUCH

What better way to bring some drama and excitement to your garden than to include a statue! A stone cherub amongst a bed of roses creates a certain charm, while a dog sculpture might bring back fond memories of your pet. A large urn on a pedestal is an elegant addition and a birdbath under a shady tree will attract feathered friends. So many possibilities...

EXTRA TIP

When placing garden structures, think like a designer. Layer tall items (like trellises or obelisks) at the back or center, mid-height features (like benches or fountains) in the middle and ground level accents like stepping stones in the front. This creates a visual framework and ensures that everything has its place.

Next time you walk through your garden, think about how these features could add beauty and function. Whether you are starting from scratch or just looking to refresh a corner, the right ornament or structure can bring your garden to life.
